The Minister of Justice and Public Order, Mr. Ionas Nicolaou, departs today, Wednesday March 11, 2015, to Brussels, in order to participate in the deliberations of the Justice and Home Affairs Council of the EU.

The Ministers are going to deal with the course of the measures taken for the fight against terrorism, as a follow-up to the agreed statement of the 12th February by the Leaders of the EU member-states and the Ministers of Justice and Home Affairs of the EU, in the framework of the Informal Council held in Riga, last January. The measures reinforce the coordination amongst member-states and mainly concern the implementation of a more effective control of the EU external borders, the fight against terrorist propaganda spread through the internet, the fight against illegal firearms trade and also enhance the data exchange amongst the law enforcement authorities.

During the second day of the deliberations, the Ministers are also going to discuss the matter of radicalization in detention centres and the relevant preventative measures.

In addition, the Ministers are going to elaborate on the Proposal for a Regulation on the protection of individuals with regard to the processing of personal data (General Data Protection Regulation) aiming at adopting a partial political agreement concerning the processing, keeping of a record and exchanging personal data, in relation to the role and the responsibilities of the proposed European Council for Personal Data Protection.

The Ministers are going to exchange views on the progress of work performed on the establishment of the European Public Prosecutor's Office, as well as, discuss the Proposal for a Regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council on the European Union Agency for Criminal Justice Cooperation (EUROJUST) relating to the cooperation amongst member states. Additionally, they are going to discuss the Proposal for a Directive on provisional legal aid in European arrest warrant proceedings.

The Minisrter is going to return to Cyprus on Saturday, 14th March.
