The Minister of Justice and Public Order, Mr Ionas Nicolaou, departs today for Luxembourg to participate in the proceedings of the ministerial meeting of the EU Justice and Home Affairs Council, which will be held on 9th and 10th June.

The Ministers are going to discuss, among others, the proposal for a Directive in relation to online purchases. The Directive aims at reinforcing the consumers’ trust and at safeguarding their rights, including the establishment of a refund right.

Moreover, the Ministers are expected to reach an agreement on the Regulations concerning matters of matrimonial property regimes and the property consequences of registered partnerships.
In addition, the Ministers are going to exchange views in relation to the collection and use of electronic proof data in the framework of comprising an effective system of criminal justice in the digital era. The target is to guarantee effective processes in keeping and collecting the data, as well as defining jurisdiction in the cyberspace.

In relation to the issue of combating terrorism, the Ministers are going to give emphasis on the improvement of the existing databases and on supplying them with further information. Furthermore, they are going to exchange views on the systematic data exchange with Europol and the utilization of Eurojust in the framework of investigation of terrorist cases.

Finally, the Ministers are going to elaborate on the proposal for a Directive for the control of the acquisition, possession and use of weapons. The proposal’s aim is to define common rules for the circulation of weapons in the EU area, so that a high level of security is provided to its citizens. In particular, amongst others, EU rules of marking and tracking weapons, standards of deactivating weapons, as well as the creation of a system of information exchange between weapon retailers and law enforcement agencies of the EU member states, are going to be established.

Mr. Nicolaou returns to Cyprus on Saturday, 11th June.
