The Minister of Justice and Public Order, Mr. Ionas Nicolaou, departs today, to Brussels, in order to participate in the deliberations of the Justice and Home Affairs Council of the EU, which is going to take place on the 3rd and 4th of December.

As a continuation to the deliberations of the extraordinary meeting of the Council held in November, due to the serious terrorist attacks in Paris, the Ministers are going to discuss anew the implementation of the measures taken for the prevention and combat of terrorism, amongst which is the course of the adoption of the Directive for the use of Passenger Name Record (PNR) data, which is expected to have a significant contribution in tracking suspects for terrorism. Furthermore, they are going to exchange views as far as the combating of on-line hate speech and racism issues are concerned, as well as the reduction of the uploaded material on terrorist propaganda by violent, radicalized individuals.
In addition, the Ministers are expected to reach an agreement on basic articles of the Proposal for a Regulation on the establishment of the European Public Prosecutor's Office, which is going to be assigned the investigation and trial of serious criminal cases committed against EU’s financial interests. They are also going to exchange views on matters of securing systems of effective criminal justice in the digital age.
Moreover, the Ministers are going to make a statement on the two Regulation Proposals concerning international jurisdiction, the applicable law and the recognition and enforcement of decisions in matters of matrimonial property regimes, as well as the property consequences of registered partnerships.

Finally, the Ministers are going to examine the consequences of the cancellation of the Directive on the retention of telecommunication data for purposes of prosecution for serious criminal offences, and elaborate on the future course of this subject.

The Minister is going to return to Cyprus on Saturday, 5th December.
